PAST VIOLATIONS AT VARIOUS UNIVERSITIES

  • Northwestern University basketball player Don Lee was suspended from playing basketball in college, and in 1998, was sentenced to one month in federal prison for wagering illegally and participating in a point shaving scheme.
  • Teddy Dupay, University of Florida senior guard, was removed from the basketball team and eventually banned from Florida's campus after gambling allegations.
  • University of Maryland suspended 3 football players and one basketball player for gambling activities. Senior quarterback Scott Milanovich was suspended for 8 games and basketball player Matt Raydo for 20 games for betting on college sport events. Football players Jaron Hairston and Farad Hall were both suspended for one game for betting on football parlay cards.
  • The University of Washington head football coach Rick Neuheisel was fired for gambling on 2 NCAA basketball tournaments. He was not aware that gambling in a friendly pool with neighbors and friends was against the rules. Neuheisel is currently the quarterbacks coach for a local high school.
  • Boston College suspended 13 football players for the final three games of the 1996 season for investigations into gambling. Three of these players had their scholarships taken away, and three others were suspended for further games. Also, in a 1982 point shaving scandal, Rick Kuhn was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for fixing six basketball games in the 1978-79 season.
  • Former Florida State quarterback Adrian McPherson was charged with one misdemeanor count of gambling, including placing bets on games in which he played. McPherson placed bets over the Internet on college and professional games during the 2002 football season.
  • Four members of the Tulane basketball team were accused of point shaving in 1985. In the aftermath of this incident, the university suspended the program for 5 years.
  • Several members of a Division I women's soccer team participated in a friendly sports pool. Consequently they were banned from 2 games each and were required to perform 10 hours of community service.

BYLAW 10.3 GAMBLING ACTIVITIES

Staff members of a member conference, staff members of the athletics department of a member institution and student-athletes shall not knowingly:

  • Provide information to individuals involved in organized gambling activities concerning intercollegiate athletics competition

  • Solicit a bet on any intercollegiate team

  • Accept a bet on any team representing the institution

  • Solicit or accept a bet on any intercollegiate competition for any item (e.g., cash, shirt, dinner) that has tangible value

  • Participate in any gambling activity that involves intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics, through a bookmaker, a parlay card or any other method employed by organized gambling.

    SANCTIONS

    The following sanctions for violations of Bylaw 10.3 shall apply as follows:

  • A student-athlete who engages in activities designed to influence the outcome of an intercollegiate contest or in an effort to affect win-loss situation margins (i.e., "point shaving") or who solicits or accepts a bet or participates in any gambling activity through a bookmaker, a parlay card or any other method employed by organized gambling that involves wagering on the student-athlete's institution shall permanently lose all remaining regular-season and postseason eligibility in all sports.

  • A student-athlete who solicits or accepts a bet or participates in any gambling activity that involves intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics, through a bookmaker, a parlay card or any other method employed by organized gambling, shall be ineligible for all regular-season and postseason competition for a minimum of a period of one year from the date of the institution's determination that a violation has occurred and shall be charged with the loss of a minimum of one season of competition. A request for reinstatement may be submitted on behalf of a student-athlete who has participated in such activity only upon fulfillment of the minimum condition indicated above. If the student-athlete is determined to have been involved in a subsequent violation of any portion of Bylaw 10.3, the student-athlete shall permanently lose all remaining regular-season and postseason eligibility in all sports.

    IN PLAIN ENGLISH...

    • You may NOT place any bet on any sport on any college or professional sports event.
    • You may NOT give information to anyone who does place bets on college or professional sports.
    • You may NOT accept a bet or bribe, agree to throw, fix, or illegally influence the outcome of any intercollegiate athletics contest.
    • NO wagers on ANY professional or college sports event, even those that don't involve your college.
    • NO sports "pools," even those run by your friends in the dorm.
    • NO Internet gambling on sports events, including fantasy sports leagues.
    • NO sports wagering using "800" numbers.
    • NO exchange of information about your team with ANYONE who gambles. In other words, no information about injuries, new plays, team morale, discipline problems, or anything else.
    • If it is discovered that a student-athlete has participated in any of the above activities, YOU ARE DECLARED INELIGIBLE TO COMPETE IN COLLEGE SPORTS.

    • If an institutional staff member participates in any of the above activities, YOU ARE SUBJECT TO TERMINATION.
