The north end zone of Memorial Stadium will become the site of a signature, 138,000-square-foot facility that will address several critical needs for IU Athletics and our student athletes.
At the heart of the new structure will be a 25,000-square-foot strength and conditioning center, located at field level, providing student athletes in every varsity sport with access to essential weight training and cardio equipment. Nearby will be the headquarters of Indiana Football, featuring new staff offices, position meeting rooms and a team auditorium. The facility will also offer increased space for athletic administration offices.
Two important features of the North End Zone Facility have been designed specifically to enhance the fan experience. First, it will become the home of the IU Hall of Champions, a space featuring museum-quality displays and a large banquet area where Hoosier fans can gather to celebrate the past, present and future of IU Athletics. Second, a new seating bowl, including an outdoor club seating area, will enclose the north end of the stadium. The resulting horseshoe layout will connect the East and West stands and will enhance the gameday atmosphere on football Saturdays. The concourse level-which will enable fans to walk from the East to West sides inside the gates-will feature new concession areas and men's, women's and family restrooms.
The North End Zone Facility, in combination with the new Academic Resource Center-to be located underneath the east side of the stadium-will create an innovative, unique compound for student athletes. With training, administration and academic support all housed in a single location, it will be significantly easier for our 600+ student athletes to meet the competing demands of their classes and their sports.
Leading the architectural planning and design of the facility is Ratio Architects of Indianapolis, assisted by Moody-Nolan, also of Indianapolis. The groundbreaking for the project occurred July 2007. Phase I, which focused on the foundation, was finished on November, 27, 2007. We are now in Phase II, actual construction, with an anticipated completion date of August 2009.
