The Hoosiers return four running backs who saw action in 2006. Marcus Thigpen and Demetrius McCray saw the bulk of the carries last season, with Thigpen leading the group with 387 yards on a 3.9 average per carry. Thigpen also caught 18 passes out of the backfield last fall.
McCray totaled 320 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns, but turned in a stellar performance against Minnesota, rushing for 39 yards and one score and added a career-best 53 receiving yards and his first two career touchdown receptions, becoming the first player since Levron Williams and Jeremi Johnson to rush for and receive a scoring strike in the same game. He also registered a career-high 84 yards on 13 carries as Hoosiers downed No. 15/13 Iowa.
Josiah Sears will continue to be a solid option for the Hoosiers in short yardage after running for 232 yards on a team-leading 5.8 per carry and four touchdowns. Sears posted his only career 100-yard game on nine carries against Wisconsin. Bryan Payton (15 carries, 36 yards) also saw limited action and will compete for playing time throughout the spring.
