Aug. 24, 2006
On Thursday, Aug. 24, IU football's coaches and fans alike took part in the 2006 IU Football Kickoff Pep Rally & Luncheon in Indianapolis. Mayor Bart Peterson declared the day "Indiana University Football Day," and head football coach Terry Hoeppner spoke to fans at the pep rally, held in Monument Circle:
[Master of Ceremonies and WIBC on-air talent] Bob Lovell tells me that this happens on a regular basis, that they close off the circle to celebrate something, but not for IU. It's us today. This is really cool.
The atmosphere in Bloomington - this is just a small taste of it. The campus is hopping right now, the students are back, and Sept. 2, we're going to cut it loose. The coaches are excited, the cheerleaders are excited, the band is excited, but most importantly the players are excited. We're going to play 13 - I haven't set limits on this team, and I've asked them not to set limits on themselves.
This year, [the motto is] `Coach Hep expects you.' It's time for us to get it going. We have the leadership, they're doing whatever they can to help us, we have no excuses. It's a great university, and our football program is going to live up to the level of the rest of our university, but we want you to be a part of it.
I want to thank the city of Indianapolis for opening its arms to us today and making this a special day for me, for IU Football and for Indiana University.
Mayor Peterson's declaration:
"To all to whom these presence may come, greetings. Whereas with the start of a new school year comes the beginning of a new football season for Indiana University; and whereas the city of Indianapolis recognizes the dedication and loyalty of the IU players, coaches and fans; and whereas IU football fans will celebrate the start of the season at a pep rally in Monument Circle hosted by Emmis Communications; and whereas the city of Indianapolis wishes the IU football players and coaches a successful 2006 season, now therefore, I, Bart Peterson, mayor of the city of Indianapolis do hereby proclaim Aug. 24, 2006 to be Indiana University Football Day in the city of Indianapolis, and I ask all citizens to join me in this observation."
