LETTER FROM CAM TO IU FANS

The pursuit to attain the ultimate goal of the Indiana University football program -- to win a Big Ten championship -- didn't commence when our players, coaches, and staff traveled to Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in the 1997 season opener. It did not begin at this year's intrasquad scrimmage and it definitely didn't begin at one of our early-season practices in Indianapolis, or Fort Wayne, or Evansville, or Terre Haute, or even Bloomington, for that matter. And it certainly didn't start during spring practice. The pursuit of our ultimate goal began when you, our great fans realized that this community and the students on this campus play a vital role in our pursuit of a Big Ten championship. In my mind, the journey has begun. Because of this, we want to thank you our fans.

Believe me, I know this year wasn't easy for you. We players and coaches wanted to win more games than we won. And I know you wanted us to win more than we won. Despite the struggles, you continued to show up week after week in hopes that we would turn things around. With this loyal support we will turn things around.

However, we know that this season wasn't acceptable. We know that we have to get better. However, we are building a strong foundation. We had a group of seniors that gave everything they had to give. They began to realize what it takes to compete in this conference and they did their best to ensure that our underclassmen were receiving the same message. This year's team got better every week. At this time, I can't ask for anything more than that. However, our staff will put together a team that competes for the Big Ten championship and represents Indiana University the way it should be represented -- in a first-class manner. I will promise you that much.

I took many things away from this football season but three items stick out in my mind: a strong sense of urgency, the heightened knowledge of what we need to do on a daily basis to build the type of football program that we must have at Indiana University, and an unwavering commitment to achieve our ultimate goal -- winning the Big Ten championship. But just as importantly, my return to Bloomington has reaffirmed my belief that there are no better people than those who reside in this great college community.

Be patient, but not too patient. Things will get better because you now know what it takes on your part to help us achieve our ultimate goal. Again, thanks for your loyal support. You will be rewarded.

Go IU,
Cam Cameron
