SOUTH BEND, Ind. -
The combination of Will Bruin and Andy Adlard proved to be very fruitful for No. 12/16 Indiana (2-1-1) as they combined for both goals in a 2-0 victory over Seattle (0-4-1) Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
Indiana wins the tournament with a 2-0 record. Bruin, Eric Alexander, Lee Hagedorn and Rich Balchan were named to the all-tournament team. Balchan also went home with devensive MVP honors, while Luis Soffner was named the goalkeeper MVP.
"I felt we played much better today," said head coach Mike Freitag. "We were more in synch defensively and are starting to jell offensively. We could have had more goals and need to start taking better chances."
Bruin put home what would be the game winner with a header at 53:58. The goal was a result of a corner kick from Adlard, the second time the two have teamed up for a goal this weekend.
It was Adlard's turn to put one in the net, recording his first goal of the season at 82:10. The play began with Kevin Bick on the left side as the freshman dished off to Bruin, who fed the ball to Adlard for the score.
Indiana finished with 19 shots on the day, six of which were on goal. Seattle tallied 11 shots, five of which were on frame. Soffner finished with five saves, recording his second shutout of the season. Adlard led the way with seven attempts, along with five from Bruin.
Adlard got the first IU shot of the day, and sent in a corner kick just a minute later which
Daniel Kelly sent high with a header. In the 17th minute Adlard nearly found the back of the net off a feed from Purdie on the goal line but the shot was blocked by a Seattle defender.
In the 25th minute, Bruin had an attempt on an open net after the goalkeeper had come forward but sent his shot high.
Indiana finished the half with a commanding 9-3 advantage in shots but just one of those attempts was on goal. Adlard led the way with four of those shots.
Bruin played in a long ball to Alec Purdie to open the second half and Purdie was able to chase down the feed. But Seattle goalkeeper Emerson DeOliveira was there to make the save on a crossing shot.
Adlard was set up with a free kick at 51:20 after Bruin was fouled just outside the penalty area. The shot, his fifth of the afternoon, was high. Bruin had another shot in the 52nd minute which required a one-handed save by DeOliveira.
Purdie played a nice feed to Hagedorn in the 64th minute with Hagedorn's shot deflecting off DeOliveira. The play ended up netting IU two corner kicks but neither resulted in a scoring attempt.
In the 75th minute, Bruin collected a ball eight yards out from the goalmouth but slid his attempt just wide right. Bick was inches away from his first collegiate goal with just over 10 minutes left in regulation, sending his shot wide across an open goal. Bruin had a chance for his second goal of the game with a wide-open net as the clock wound down to two minutes but again the ball sailed wide right.
The Hoosiers are back in action next weekend as they continue a five-game road swing with the University of Akron Tournament, Sept. 18 and 20 in Akron, Ohio. Indiana will face No. 1 Akron on Friday at 7:30 p.m., followed by Florida International University on Sunday at noon.
