ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
A goal from Andy Adlard and a fingertip save by Luis Soffner in the final seconds were the difference makers in a 1-0 win for No. 14 Indiana (6-4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) at Michigan (8-3-1, 1-2 Big Ten) Saturday afternoon.
Adlard gave the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead at 53:15 with his fourth goal of the season, three of which have come in the last three games. Michigan attempted to clear the ball, but it instead landed at the feet of Adlard who sent in a bullet on the run, hitting the upper right.
"That was an Indiana win," said head coach Mike Freitag. "We gutted it out, worked hard and pulled together as a team. It wasn't pretty, but we'll take the win."
Michigan nearly had the equalizer with just seconds remaining in the match as Justin Meram broke free and took a shot that Soffner just got his fingertips on a poked wide for the clinching save. Soffner finished with three saves in the match and has yet to allow a goal in Big Ten play.
Michigan finished ahead in the shot tally, 12-10, with Will Bruin and Eric Alexander leading the way with two shots each.
It was a relatively uneventful first half for Indiana with just three shots, one each on goal from Tommy Meyer and Caleb Konstanski. Meyer had the first shot of the match for either team with nearly 15 minutes off the clock. Konstanski's attempt came in the 18th minute.
While it won't shot up on the stat sheet, with less than five minutes left in the half Bruin was nearly on the receiving end of a serve but at the last minute a U-M defender got his foot on it and tipped it away.
Luis Soffner had a pair of saves in the half as Michigan put up five shots.
The Hoosiers continue their road swing as they travel to South Bend, Ind. on Wednesday for a nonconference matchup against Notre Dame. Match time is 7 p.m. ET.
