Series History: First Meeting

SETTING THE SCENE

• For the sixth-straight season the Hoosiers will participate in the seventh annual Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament at Notre Dame.

• Indiana has been a part of six of the seven tournaments, missing the inaugural event in 2002.

• The Hooisers will face the fifth-ranked South Florida Bulls on Friday at 5 p.m., and Darmouth on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

• Indiana enters the weekend matches 1-0-1 after a 2-1 win over Duke and 0-0 double overtime tie with No. 12 Akron in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.

• The Hoosiers are the defending tournament champion after a 1-0 win over Northern Illinois and a 3-1 over Rhode Island last season.

Andy Adlard, Eric Alexander, Brad Ring and Charley Traylor were named to the all-tournament team in 2007.

Brad Ring was honored as the defensive MVP, while Chay Cain was named the Most Outstanding Goalkeeper.

 

 

NEWS AND NOTES

• Indiana finished as runner up at its adidas/IU Credit Union Classic with a 2-1 win over Duke on Aug. 29 and a 0-0 double overtime tie with No. 12 Akron on Aug. 31.

Kevin Alston and John Mellencamp scored the goals for IU in the win over Duke. Mellencamp's game winner was the first of his career and just his second career goal.

• Freshmen Will Bruin and Tommy Meyer started out their IU careers with starts in each match.

Chay Cain recorded his 21st career solo shutout in the tie with Akron.

• 3,239 fans were on hand for the IU-Akron match, ranking sixth on the opening weekend attendance list.

• 3,464 fans were on hand for the 2-1 win over Duke.

• Indiana was victorious in its home opener for the first time since 2005.

• Indiana is 0-0-1 against top-25 teams this season.

• The Hoosiers finished the preseason with a 2-0 record after a 3-1 victory over Tulsa on Aug. 20 and a 3-0 shutout of North Carolina on Aug. 22.

• Indiana is now 21-10-5 in season openers.

• With a 0-0 tie with Akron on Aug. 31, Indiana has never lost a match televised on the Big Ten Network, going 3-0-4 in those games.

SCOUTING THE BULLS

• South Florida is 1-0 on the season after a 3-0 win over Bowling Green.

• Zak Boggs, Bernardo Anor and Jordan Seabrook each scored for the Bulls.

• Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo recorded the shutout.

• USF outshot the Falcons 17-1, including a 10-0 shots on-goal advantage.

• Head coach George Kiefer is in his seventh season at South Florida and enters Friday's match with a record of 65-39-13.

• He is assisted by Ryan Anatol, Fred Dickranian and Bo Oshoniyi.

SERIES HISTORY

• Indiana leads the series, 2-1.

• Indiana has won the last two meetings, 3-1 on Oct. 29, 1993 and 6-0 on Dec. 7, 1997.

• The last meeting came in the NCAA Tournament with the win sending the Hoosiers to the College Cup.

• The Hoosiers only loss in the series came in 1984, a 3-1 defeat.

SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN

• The Big Green open their season this weekend, beginning with Notre Dame on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

• Dartmouth was 11-4-3 overall last season and finished second in the Ivy League with a mark of 5-1-1.

• The Big Green advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they tied Vermont in the first round, 1-1.

• Senior Craig Henderson returns after lead the team in goals (six), assists (four) and total points (16) last season.

• Senior Sean Milligan is back between the pipes after starting 18 matches in 2007 with a 0.54 GAA.

• Head coach Jeff Cook is in his eighth season at Dartmouth and enters the weekend with a record of 131-105-40 with the Big Green.

• He is assisted by Johan Cedergren and Trevor Gorman.

• Gorman is the son of Penn State head coach Barry Gorman.

SERIES HISTORY

• This is the first meeting between Indiana and Dartmouth.

ALSTON IS BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• Indiana University junior defender Kevin Alston is the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Sept. 1. It is the second career Big Ten Player of the Week honor for Alston.

• Alston sparked the Hoosiers to a 1-0-1 start to the 2008 season with a 2-1 win over Duke and a 0-0 double overtime tie against No. 12 Akron at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. Against the Blue Devils, Alston put the Hoosiers on the board first with a goal in the 59th minute, the third score of his career. He finished the match with a pair of shots as IU won its first home opener since the 2005 season.

• Against Akron Alston led a defense that recorded its first shutout of the season, keeping the Zips off the board over 110 minutes of play. Alston also continued his offensive efforts with two shots, one of which was on goal. He was honored with a spot on the all-tournament team and was named defensive MVP.

ALSTON HONORED BY COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS

• In addition to his Big Ten honor, junior defender Kevin Alston was also named to the College Socer News Team of the Week on Sept. 1 for his performance in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.

BROTHERLY LOVE

• On Aug. 31 it was brother vs. brother as junior Ofori Sarkodie took the pitch for Indiana and faced off against his brother, freshman Kofi Sarkodie of Akron.

• In what would be the best scenario for their mom, the game ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie.

• As both brothers are defenders, both helped lead their team to a shutout, the first of the season for IU.

2008 ADIDIAS/IU CREDIT UNION CLASSIC RECAP

• Indiana finished as runner-up at the 2008 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic (Aug. 29-31) with a 1-0-1 record.

• Akron was also 1-0-1 but took home the tournament title based on goal differential.

• It is the second-straight season IU has lost out on the tournament crown based on goal differential. In 2007 it was Maryland that took home the title.

• The Hoosiers opened play with a 2-1 win over Duke on Aug. 29. Kevin Alston and John Mellencamp were responsible for the scores.

• Freshmen Will Bruin and Tommy Meyer recorded their first career starts in the match.

• The tournament ended with a 0-0 double overtime tie between Indiana and Akron that was broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.

Brad Ring, Kevin Alston and Neil Wilmarth were rewarded for their play by being named to the All-Tournament Team.

• Alston also took home the Defensive MVP title.

SCORING MACHINE?

John Mellencamp got his season started on the right foot with the game-winning goal in the Hoosiers' 2-1 victory over Duke in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.

• It was just the second career goal for Mellencamp and his first game winner.

• It took John Mellencamp almost three full years to score his first goal for IU, coming up with a score against Bradley in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

• His two career goals came in back-to-back matches...the last match of 2007 and the first match of 2008.

ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET

• Senior goalkeeper Chay Cain recorded his 21st career solo shutout on Aug. 31 as No. 7/3 Akron played No. 12/12 Akron to a 0-0 tie.

• Cain recorded 10 shutouts in 2006 and added another 10 in 2007.

• Cain ranks ninth on IU's career shutout list, 10th in saves and 10th in career wins.

RANKING THE HOOSIERS

• Indiana ranks among the top 25 in all four polls. • College Soccer News has Indiana in the No. 4 spot, while Soccer Times also ranks the Hoosiers at No. 4.

• The NSCAA/adidas poll moved the Hoosiers up one spot to No. 6, with Soccer America putting IU at No. 3.

• Indiana is the highest-ranked Big Ten team in all four polls , ahead of both Ohio State and Northwestern.

SCORING DEPTH

•Indiana showed its depth during the preseason as the six goals were scored by six different players.

Andy Adlard, John Mellencamp and Michael Roach came with the scores against the Golden Hurricanes.

• In the win over North Carolina, it was Neil Wilmarth, Brian Ackley and Kevin Noschang putting the ball in the net.

• Freshmen Will Bruin and Tommy Meyer saw significant playing time with both players starting the two preseason matches.

• Indiana also took a look at freshmen Luis Soffner and Michael Munroe in goal, both of whom had cleaned sheets in 45 minutes of action each.

ST. LOUIS PIPELINE

• Head coach Mike Freitag has not forgotten his roots as five players on the roster hail from St. Louis.

• Sophomore Michael Roach and freshmen Will Bruin, Chris Haffner, Tommy Meyer and Luis Soffner all came to IU from the "Gateway City."

• Soffner, Meyer and Haffner all attended Saint Louis University High, while Bruin went to rival DeSmet. Roach is a graduate of Chaminade College Prep.

• Bruin, Haffner and Soffner all played club ball with Scott-Gallagher.

• Freitag's own playing career took place at Christian Brothers College (CBC).
