SETTING THE SCENE
• Indiana returns to Big Ten play as it travels north to face the Michigan State Spartans.
• The Hoosiers are coming off a 2-0 win at Butler on Tuesday night with goals from Daniel Kelly and Neil Wilmarth.
• Indiana was a 1-0 winner in its last trip to East Lansing with a victory in the semifinals of the 2007 Big Ten Tournament.
• IU has won the last three meetings with the Spartans.
• Indiana has not lost on the road this sason, going 3-0 in true road matches.

NEWS AND NOTES
• Indiana scored in the first half for just the third time this season in the 2-0 win at Butler on Oct. 7.
• Daniel Kelly’s game-winning goal against the Bulldogs came just 11 seconds in, the fastest goal from the start of the match in school history.
• Goalkeeper Chay Cain recorded his fourth shutout of the season and the 24th of his career in the 2-0 win at Butler on Oct. 7.
• The loss to Michigan on Oct. 4 snapped an eight match unbeaten streak in Big Ten play.
• Indiana has already given more goals in two Big Ten game this year (three) as it did in all six Big Ten games in 2007 (two).
• Indiana’s 1-0 loss to Michigan was its first-ever defeat at the hands of the Wolverines.
• The Hoosiers are 2-0-3 in their last five Big Ten overtime matches.
• Indiana is 1-0-2 against top-25 teams this season.
• Freshman Will Bruin became the first Hoosier to score multiple goals in a match in a 3-2 overtime win at Evansville on Sept. 30. Bruin also recorded his first game-winning goal.
• Indiana is 2-0-2 in overtime matches this season.

• Indiana was out-shot for the first time this season against Butler on Oct. 7 (12-10).

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
• Michigan State is 5-5-0 on the season, most recently dropping a 3-0 decision at Notre Dame on Wednesday.
• Forward Doug DeMartin is among the nation’s leaders in goals scored with 10. He also has two assists for 22 points.
• Zac Scaffidi, Jeff Ricondo and Spencer Thompson are next on the list with two goals each.
• Avery Steinlage and Jeremy Clark have split time in goal. Steinlage has apeeared in seven matches with six starts, totallying 530:10 minutes and allowing seven goals for a 1.19 GAA. Clark has appeared in five matches with three starts, allowing nine goals in 369:50 for a 2.19 GAA.
• Michigan State is 3-1 at home this season with the only loss coming to Vermont (2-1). It is 1-0 at home in Big Ten play (vs. Wisconsin, 1-0).
• Head coach Joe Baum is in his 32nd season at MSU and enters the match with a record of 312-228-52.
• He is assisted by Damon Rensing and John McElroy.

SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana leads the all-time series, 33-1-2.
• The Hoosiers are 3-0-1 in the last four meetings, including a 1-0 win in East Lansing last season in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
• Indiana’s only loss in the series came in 2004, a 2-1 defeat in Big Ten Tournament play.
• Michigan State has managed just one goal over the last four meetings and has never scored more than two goals on the Hoosiers (4-2 loss in 1983, 2-1 win in 2004).
• Indiana has shut out the Spartans 27 times in 36 meetings, including each of the last two meetings.

THAT WAS QUICK!
• Indiana took a 1-0 lead at Butler on Oct. 7 before most of the fans even had a chance to get settled into their seats.
• Daniel Kelly’s heads-up play resulted in a goal just 11 seconds into the match in what would end up a 2-0 victory for Indiana.
• Butler played the opening kickoff back through the midfielders and to its goalkeeper, but the keeper misplayed his touch and Kelly was there to pounce on the mistake for the score.
• That is the fastest goal from the start of the match in school history, beating the old mark of 16 seconds set by Mike Hylla against Saint Louis on Oct. 2, 1982.
• That is also tied for the ninth-fastest score in NCAA history.

BIG TEN ... BIG TIME
• The Big Ten currently has four teams ranked in the latest College Soccer News top 30 poll.
• Northwestern (9-0-2) leads the way at No. 3, followed by Michigan (8-2-2) at No. 17.
• Ohio State (7-2-1) is ranked 20th, followed by the Hoosiers in 22nd.
• According to Soccer America, Northwestern is No. 5, followed by No. 13 Michigan, No. 16 Ohio State and No. 23 Indiana.
• Soccer Times also has all four teams ranked with No. 3 Northwestern, No. 15 Ohio State, No. 19 Indiana and No. 20 Michigan.

WAKE UP!
• The Hoosiers have admittedly gotten off to slow starts in matches this season and a look at the statistics backs up that claim.
• Indiana has been outscored 6-3 in the first period. The Hoosiers’ first-half goals have come against San Diego (2-1 win), Wisconsin (3-2 OT win) and Butler (2-0 win).
• IU had perked up in the second half where 11 of its 16 goals have been scored. The Hoosiers have also had two game-winning scores in the first overtime period.

BRUIN ON FIRE
• Highly-touted freshman Will Bruin has caught fire as of late, scoringtwo goals against Evansville on Sept. 30, including the game-winning strike in overtime.
• Bruin leads the team with four goals overall, and three of those four goals have come in the last four matches.
• Out of his 35 shots, Bruin has put 18 on frame for a .514 shots on-goal percentage, second best on the team.

HOME, SWEET HOME?
• Indiana is 2-2-1 this season in the normally friendly confines of Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
• Indiana has lost back-to-back home matches for the first time since 2000.
• That year the Hoosiers opened the season with losses to Portland and UCLA but went on to advance to the NCAA College Cup.
• On the flip side, IU is 3-0 in true road matches and 4-1-1 in all games away from Bloomington.

SEVEN HOOSIERS ON NCAA COLLEGE CUP 50TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM BALLOT
• Six former Indiana men’s soccer players and former head coach Jerry Yeagley are part of the ballot for the NCAA Men’s College Cup 50th Anniversary Team, the NCAA announced Monday.
• A total of 32 players and six coaches are included on the voting ballot, which can be found on NCAA.com. Fans will have the chance to select the 11 best student-athletes and one coach through the last 50 years of the championship.
• Indiana’s student-athlete representatives are Armando Betancourt, Angelo DiBernardo, Dema Kovalenko, Brian Maisonneuve, Pat Noonan and Ken Snow. Voting for the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer 50th Anniversary team began on Oct. 6 and will run until noon on Oct. 15. Individual fans only will be able to submit one vote.

RANKING THE HOOSIERS
• The Hoosiers dropped three spots to No. 19 in the Soccer Times poll.
• Soccer America puts the Hoosiers in the No. 23 spot, six places lower than last week’s ranking.
• Indiana fell to No. 22 in the latest College Soccer News rankings.
• For the first time this season, Indiana is not ranked the NSCAA/adidas poll.


 

 


BIG TEN DOMINATION
• Since the Big Ten began sponsoring men’s soccer in 1991, the Hoosier have dominated the league.
• The Hoosiers are 78-8-9 in regular season matches, tallying nearly 30 more victories than second-place team Penn State (50).
• Indiana has never lost in its Big Ten opener, going 15-0-3 in those matches.
• IU has won 11 Big Ten tournament titles, sharing the 1995 crown with Wisconsin.
• Indiana has also been crowned regular season champion 13 times, including nine-straight seasons from 1996-2004. IU has now won back-to-back regular season titles in 2006 and 2007.
• Indiana has been the league’s goals-against average leader in 15 of 17 seasons, including 2007 when the Hoosiers allowed just two goals in six matches for a 0.31 GAA.
• IU has had a league-record 10 Big Ten Players of the Year, including two of the last three seasons.
• The Hoosiers have also boasted the Freshman of the Year two of the last three years.

ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET
• Senior goalkeeper Chay Cain recorded his 24th career solo shutout on
Oct. 7 when the Hoosiers posted a 2-0 win at Butler.
• It was his fourth shutout of the season (Akron, South Florida, UCLA).
• Cain recorded 10 shutouts in 2006 and added another 10 in 2007.
• Cain ranks seventh on IU’s career shutout list, eighth in saves (169) and ninth in career wins (31).

NCAA RPI RELEASED
• The NCAA has released its first RPI rankings of the season for men’s soccer and the Hoosiers are in the No. 11 spot.
• Out of the seven Big Ten teams, four are ranked in the top 25 with Indiana joined by No. 7 Northwestern, No. 13 Michigan and No. 14 Ohio State.
• The Rating Percentage Index is a mathematical measurement of a team’s strength.
• The NCAA tournament selection committee uses it to help determine which teams will receive at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament. The formula consists of a team’s winning percentage against Division I opponents (25 percent), the opponents’ strength of schedule (50 percent) and the opponents’ opponents’ strength of schedule (25 percent).
