WALTHAM, Mass. - Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Munroe became the first Hoosier men's soccer player to be named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® First Team on Monday, Nov. 21. The Indianapolis, Ind., native was the third Hoosier men's soccer player to earn Academic All-America honors and was selected through balloting of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

"Chris is the model student-athlete," Indiana head men's soccer coach Mike Freitag said. "He excels both on the field and in the classroom. He is the type of young man that we are proud to have in our program. He is the type of person where you know once he leaves Indiana he will be successful in whatever he does."

The Academic All-America® Teams honor 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

Munroe earned Academic All-District V accolades earlier this season to become eligible for the Academic All-America team. Last season, eventual Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate Danny O'Rourke was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® third team. During the 2001 season, goalkeeper Colin Rogers was a second team All-Academic All-America® honoree.

Munroe started every match for the Hoosiers this season in goal. He has a record of 13-3-6 with a goals against average of 0.71, 57 saves and 10 shutouts. Munroe's goals against average and shutouts both ranked 17th on the IU single season lists.

He earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 10 after notching consecutive shutout wins at Louisville and Michigan. Munroe enjoyed perhaps the best game of his young Hoosier career on Sept. 17 against then-No. 25 Cal State-Northridge. He made a career-best seven saves including a pair late in the first half from close range in a 5-0 victory. On Nov. 3, Munroe also registered three stops in a 1-0 shutout of then-No. 1 Akron, who at the time as the top-ranked scoring offense in the country.

Munroe is a business finance and marketing major with a near perfect grade point average. Last year, he earned the Indiana University Tichenor Award given to the IU student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average.
