FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Indiana's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Todd Patrick, Matt Lenton, Ben Hesen and Ante Zoricic set a new school record with a time of 2:55.25 to close out the 2008 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
With the 11th-place finish in the 400 free relay, Indiana finished 10th overall at the championships with 166 total points. This marks the first time in school history that both the men's and women's teams have posted top-10 finishes at the NCAA meet in the same season. Arizona took home the team title with 500.5 points, followed by Texas (406), Stanford (344), California (332.5) and Auburn (316). Michigan was the top Big Ten finisher in sixth (271.5) followed by the Hoosiers, Minnesota (11th), Northwestern (85) and Ohio State (63).
"It was fantastic to finish top 10 with the men and combined with the women," said head coach Ray Looze. "To close out with a school record on the 400 free relay was a nice way to punctuate the evening. Overall, we did the best we could today. We ran out of gas a bit in certain events but overall it was a fantastic season and one that we will remember and build upon.
"We've got IU back on the map and hopefully we can use this to help us attract the kind of kids in the future that will help us move into the top five and beyond."
