BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University wrestling team traveled to Iowa City for a Friday night showdown with the nation's top-ranked Hawkeyes. Despite several heated battles, the Hoosiers fell short in a 28-7 final score.
The night began with arguably the most-anticipated match of the night. The 125-pound weight class pitted undefeated and second-ranked Angel Escobedo versus Iowa's Charlies Falck, who is ranked right behind Escobedo at number three according to the NWCA/Intermatwrestle.com national rankings.
Falck lit the scoreboard first with a first period takedown before choosing down to begin the second stanza, and earning an escape point for a 3-0 lead. It was Escobedo's turn to start in the down position in the third frame. Falck was warned and then called for stalling with 1:16 remaining in the match. Seconds later, Escobedo got an escape of his own to close the gap at 3-2 with 1:10 left to go. No takedowns occurred from there while Falck's 1:04 riding time advantage gave him a 4-2 win.
Senior Brandon Becker continued his current hot streak by defeating yet another nationally-ranked opponent. No. 12 Ryan Morningstar was no match for No. 4 Becker, getting blanked, 9-0 by IU's two-time All-American. Becker recorded two takedowns, a three-point near fall, an escape and a 2:42 riding time advantage for the win. The Mickleton, New Jersey native improved to 18-3 on the year.
No. 14 Matt Coughlin also seized a victory for the Cream and Crimson inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. His opponent in the 165-pound bout was Jake Kerr. Coughlin took a 3-1 edge into the third period where he began in the top position. From there, Coughlin chose an optional start, allowing Kerr to get a free pass to his feet. Thirty seconds later, Coughlin added two more points with a takedown before cutting Kerr free once again. Coughlin continued to extend his lead with another takedown less than a minute later in the 7-4 triumph.
