Feb. 7, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- The sixth annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) event will be held on Sunday, Feb. 12 in conjunction with the Indiana-Northwestern women's basketball game. NGWSD is an event designed to inform young women/children on the importance of education and our emerging role in athletics.

"This event gets bigger and bigger every year and we are very happy to be a part of it," Indiana women's basketball head coach Sharon Versyp said. "Not only will it be an educational experience for young women and children, but everyone involved will also have a lot of fun while engaging in these activities. We encourage everyone to come out and take part in this event and support us in our final regular-season home game."

From 12-2 p.m. in Assembly Hall various Indiana University athletic teams and organizations on campus and throughout the community will have interactive booths in which youth may participate in. Kids will have a chance to try new sports skills, meet current IU student-athletes, and learn about the benefits of being involved in athletics.

At half time of the Indiana-Northwestern game The Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) will present the National Girls and Women in Sport Leadership and Achievement Award to HPER alumna Buffy Gordon Filippell for all of her athletics and professional achievements. Gordon Filippell is the founder of TeamWork Consulting, Inc., an executive search firm for the sports and event management industry.

Pre-game festivities are free of charge. Admission to the game is $5 for adults, $3 for youth, and groups of 20 or more are $2 per person. Tickets can be purchased on the day of the game or by calling 1-866-IUSPORTS.
