MUNCIE, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team opened its preseason competition with a 3-0 win at Ball State on Wednesday, Aug. 19, behind goals from redshirt sophomore Brenna Moeljadi and redshirt freshman Morgan Fleetwood.
The Hoosiers took control early, taking five shots and tallying two corners before Moeljadi got her first goal on a corner that was sent in by senior Alina Valenti, with assists going to Valenti and junior Katie Griswold. IU controlled possession keeping the Cardinals without a shot until the 26:36 mark when Elizabeth Blaum's shot went wide. The Hoosiers only allowed two more shots by BSU before the break, while taking 15 in the first period.
Within two and half minutes of the second period, Moeljadi netted her second goal of the game, off another corner from Valenti as she and Griswold gained their second assists of the day. The Hoosiers continued to hold tight on possession in the second period, allowing Ball State only three shots. With 56:55 on the clock, Fleetwood got in the net on another corner from Valenti to give the Hoosiers the win.
"We learned a lot about ourselves today," said IU head coach Amy Robertson. "We have some things that we are much improved on from the spring. We just need to continue working on finishing the opportunities that we're creating and increasing our goal scoring percentage."
Fleetwood tallied a team-high eight shots, all on goal, and Moeljadi took five shots with three on goal. Valenti led the team with three assists, while Griswold tallied two and senior Lucy Ireland recorded the Hoosiers' only defensive save. Sophomore Becky Pany started in goal for Indiana and recorded two saves. Indiana outshot Ball State, 27-7.
The Hoosiers play their second preseason scrimmage at Louisville on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 4 p.m. ET, before opening the regular season against American University on Friday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. in Richmond, Va.
