BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's swimming and diving team trails Texas 133-125 and Michigan 143-115 after two sessions of a double dual meet at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington.
"We got banged around a bit in the first session," said head coach Ray Looze. "But while the coaches were busy with the men's meet, the women ran their own team meeting and came out mentally prepared. We need to take care of our bodies now and come out swinging tomorrow in the final session."
IU opened the day with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Presley Bard, Kristin Cihoski, Brittany Epperson and Donna Smailis clocked in a time of 1:35.53. In the 500-yard freestyle, freshman Amanda Smith took third out of lane three with a season-best time of 4:52.15, improving upon her NCAA "B" cut mark. Teammate Allison Kay was ninth (5:02.50). In the second heat, Brittany Barwegen touched the wall first with a season-best time of 4:57.31, finishing fifth overall.
Ashley Jones was the top Indiana finisher in the 200 individual medley at 2:06.61 (seventh). Smailis was next to touch the wall for IU in eighth (2:06.93), followed by Cihoski in 10th (2:07.55).

The first session of the three-leg double dual meet wrapped up with the 400 medley relay. The Hoosiers were neck-in-neck with Michigan going into the final 50 meters of the freestyle before the Wolverines pulled away for a 3:43.97 victory. The Hoosiers were right behind at 3:45.88, the second-fastest IU time this year. Session one ended with Michigan over IU (73-37) and Texas over IU (66-44). Michigan led Texas by a 67-43 score.
In diving, Brittney Feldman continued her hot streak with a win in the three-meter, scoring 309.85 points. Amy Korthauer was sixth (266.75) and senior Ashley Greene finished in the points in ninth (227.10). Jade Summerlin was 11th (213.80), followed by Christina Kouklakis (13th-204.00) and Heidi Mahnken (189.90). On the one meter, Feldman paced IU with a third-place showing (294.10), followed by Greene in seventh (240.85).
"Brittney looked good on the three meter and continues to show improvement," said head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber. "We trained right through this meet so I thought she was a little flat in the one-meter competition. I thought our women as a whole showed improvement today."
The evening session opened with an IU victory in the 200 medley relay as Bard, Sarah Stockwell, Smailis and Kelsey Atchison combined for a time of 1:43.49. Kay led the way in the 400 individual medley with her fourth-place time of 4:24.66.
Indiana went 1-2 in the 100-yard butterfly as Barwegen set a new career mark of 55.46 to win the event, followed by Smailis in second. Barwegen was 1/10th of a second off the NCAA "B" cut. Cihoski was fifth (56.38) and Christie Fuchs 10th (57.88).
In a race that went down to the wire, Bard edged out Susana Escobar of Texas to take first in the 200 free (1:50.73). Amanda Smith contributed to the point total with her third-place time of 1:50.94. The Hoosiers took second and fourth in the 100 breaststroke as Stockwell touched the wall in 1:04.60, followed by Abby Cooper (1:04.83).
