Hoosiers Off to Fast Start at U.S. Short Course Nationals

ATLANTA, Ga. - Freshman Nikki White's fourth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle highlighted the Hoosier performances on day one of the 2008 ConocoPhillps Short Course National Championships being held at the National Aquatics Center in Atlanta, Ga.
White touched the wall fourth in 4:41.75, six seconds off the pace of Mary Descenza who set a course record with a time of 4:35.63. White qualified first for the 500 free final after posting a morning prelim time of 4:41.70. That is the second-fastest time in school history, just off her school record of 4:36.61 set two weeks ago at the Hoosierland Invitational.
Teammate Amanda Smith placed fourth in the consolation final with a time of 4:46.39.
In the men's 500 free, sophomore Titus Knight posted a time of 4:26.33 to finish sixth in the consolation final. Freshman Eric Ress touched the wall first in the bonus final with a season-best time of 4:22.90, which is an NCAA B cut.
Ress also swam the 200 individual medley in the morning session, finishing 59th with a time of 1:56.07.
Donna Smailis swam her first event of the meet, finishing just out of the 200 individual medley consolation final with a time of 2:02.73. Smith also competed in the event, coming home in 2:11.53.
The event continues through Saturday with Hoosier swimmers competing in the 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke on Friday.
