Zubkova Named National, Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University sophomore Kate Zubkova is the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is the first Big Ten honor for Zubkova in her career.

In addition, on Wednesday CollegeSwimming.com honored Zubkova as its National Swimmer of the Week.

Competing in her first meet as a Hoosier at the Irish Invitational last weekend, Zubkova recorded six first-place finishes and was a part of three pool records as Indiana beat out Michigan, Notre Dame and Illinois for the Invitational title. Her best performance came in the 100-yard backstroke where she recorded a pool record and NCAA `A' standard time of 54.18. She also met the `B' standard and set a pool record in the 200-yard backstroke with her time of 1:58.03.

Zubkova led IU to three first-place relay finishes, swimming the leadoff led of the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley relays. The 400-yard medley team set a new pool record with a time of 3:42.75, while the 200-yard medley relay recorded an NCAA `B' standard of 1:42.18 to finish first. The 200 free relay team topped all other competitors with a time of 1:34.30.

In addition, Zubkova also took first in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 200-yard individual medley.

Indiana is back in action this Friday as it travels to No. 9 Tennessee. The diving portion of the dual meet will get underway at 11:30, with the swimming events starting at 1 p.m.
