BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sarah Gustin and David Jack have been named assistant volleyball coaches at Indiana, head coach Sherry Dunbar announced on Wednesday, Jan. 3. Gustin comes to Bloomington after spending the past three seasons with Dunbar at College of Charleston while Jack, a former Jamaican National Team captain, has more than 12 years of club and high school coaching experience.
"It was a priority to assemble a staff that is on the same page in moving this program forward," Dunbar said. "I definitely found that with Sarah and David. I wanted a great mix of people that are as energetic as I am about the sport and the program. We are very excited to have both of them at Indiana."
Gustin, who worked primarily with the middle blockers and outside hitters while assisting Dunbar with the Cougars, served as the recruiting coordinator for the program. College of Charleston advanced to the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship in all three seasons that Gustin was an assistant, and she coached numerous All-Southern Conference honorees, including the 2006 Freshman of the Year, Emily Sawin. Prior to her time at College of Charleston, Gustin served as an assistant coach at California Polytechnic State University (Cal-Poly) during the 2004 season.
In addition to having spent time coaching across the country, Gustin is no stranger to the Big Ten. A 2001 graduate of Michigan State, she was a four-year letterwinner in East Lansing, an All-Big Ten honoree in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and earned team Most Valuable Player honors in 1999. Gustin was an All-Region academic honoree in 2000 and was also the recipient of the Spartans' Highest GPA Award from 1998-2000.
"Sarah is very familiar with the type of student-athletes that I want to recruit and that we want playing at Indiana," Dunbar said. "She knows what kind of players will work with the program and also in the Big Ten, having played in the conference herself. We are very comfortable together and have a similar work ethic."
Jack last served as the head coach of the Girls' 18-1 Elite team and as the camp director for the Long Island Big Apple Volleyball Club in Long Island, N.Y., from 2002-05. He guided the team to consecutive Junior Olympic national bids, developed three players who earned scholarships at Division I institutions and also created and implemented a training program for the club. Prior to his time at Long Island Apple, Jack founded the Salt City Volleyball Club in Syracuse, N.Y., and coached the 18-1 Elite boys' team from 1995-2000. During that span, he also served as the head coach of the Central Square High School junior varsity boys' team and was an assistant coach for the boys' varsity team.
In addition to his coaching experience, Jack brings an extensive playing resume to the Indiana program. A member of the Jamaican National Team from 1985-98, he was also an eight-time All-American at the U.S. Open Championships between 1990 and 2005. A Sportsman of the Year nominee in 1993, Jack earned a bevy of accolades and honors throughout his career.
"David was a great find, and he is a great trainer with a lot of experience in the game, both as a coach and as a player," Dunbar said. "He also has a presence about him that makes you comfortable, but he is intense, and that makes you want you to play for him."
