BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 15th ranked Indiana women's water polo team scored two goals in the final minute to cut the Hartwick lead to one, but could not get possession in the closing seconds and the 16th ranked Hawks held on for the 4-3 win. The game was played at the Councilman Billingsley Aquatic Center, the first home game of the season for Indiana.
The Hawks (12-7) got the first goal of the game just a minute and a half into the contest from Ellen Sevigny but the Hoosiers (10-12) responded two minutes later on the man-up power play. Brooke Zimmerman took a pass from Nicole Sands and fired a shot from straightaway past Hartwick goalkeeper Jessica Dorman to tie the game a 1-1.
From here the IU offense went cold, hitting the crossbar and side of the goal on numerous occasions while the Hawks did just enough to extend their lead. With a minute and a half left before halftime, Lisa Gibson beat Indiana goalkeeper Katie Carson with a long distance shot as the shot clock was about to expire, giving Hartwick a 2-1 lead. Jessica McKee pushed the lead to 3-1 for the Hawks with a goal 50 seconds into the second half.
Hartwick did not let up to start the fourth period either, scoring its fourth goal of the game two minutes into the period. After a couple missed opportunities in the middle of the fourth period, Indiana head coach Barry King called a timeout to try to motivate the Hoosiers in the final two minutes.
Brooke Zimmerman responded with her second goal of the game, taking the pass at the top from freshman Lauren Wyckoff and depositing it in the back of the goal. Then with 16 seconds remaining, Nicole Redder took a crossing pass from Kelly Palmberg and put it past Dorman before she could recover to bring the Hoosiers to within one at 4-3.
