PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Brooke Zimmerman scored her third goal of the game with seven seconds left on the clock as the Indiana water polo team defeated Brown, 9-8, to open the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championships on Saturday, April 28. Zimmerman was named the Player of the Game for her performance.

Indiana, the No. 5 seed in the championships, got on the board first as senior Emily Schmitt took a pass from Zimmerman with 5:42 left in the first quarter. Brown tied the score with just over three minutes left to play, but Zimmerman tallied her first goal of the game with 1:41 remaining to put IU ahead 2-1 to close out the frame.

The Hoosiers opened the second frame on fire, with Schmitt putting the Hoosiers up 3-1 just 17 seconds into the period. Zimmerman added to her total with a goal at the seven minute mark, and freshman Kelly Palmberg put the Hoosiers up 5-1 on the power play with just under two and a half minutes to play. The Bears cut the lead back to three, but Palmberg scored her second goal of the game with one second left to give IU a 6-2 lead heading into the break.

Senior Melissa Soria put the Hoosiers up by six, 7-2, with 7:15 remaining in the third off a pass from junior Brittany Estrada, but Brown rattled off two goals to wrap up the third and two more to open the fourth frame to cut the Hoosier advantage to one, 7-6, with 4:56 left to play. Soria put the Hoosiers on a rebound shot 18 seconds later, but Brown tied the score at 8-8 with just over one minute to play.

With the clock ticking down, freshman Katie Carson picked the ball up outside of the goal and passed it down the pool. Zimmerman picked it up and found the back of the goal to give the Hoosiers the lead and the victory.
